内容記述 Plagiarism, one aspect of academic dishonesty,
is a serious problem and becoming more
common in higher education. This study examined
undergraduate students at the faculty of
economics, Shiga University, on their knowle
dgeofplagiarism. Atotalof 106
undergraduate students were presented with an
original paragraph and three rewritten versions
of the original paragraph, one of which was
considered plagiarized according to published
guidelines because it included strings of words
copied directly from the original text with
proper citation but without quotation marks;
another of which was considered acceptable
because quotation marks were placed around
the words copied from the original text with
proper citation; and the third was also considered
acceptable because the original text was
properly paraphrased without copying exact
words or structure accompanied by proper attribution.
The students were asked to compare
each rewritten version of the paragraph to the
original text and identify whether each version
was acceptable (not plagiarized), indeterminable,
or inappropriate (plagiarized). The results
suggested that the students’ knowledge of
proper ways of citing and paraphrasing the
original text was insufficient and that their criteria
for distinguishing plagiarism and
appropriate citations were ambiguous. These
findings suggest that some students would
commit plagiarism unintentionally because
they do not understand what plagiarism is. Instruction
on quotation and paraphrasing seems
to reduce the incidence of students’ plagiarism
resulting from their ignorance.
