This study examined\nundergraduate students at the faculty of\neconomics, Shiga University, on their knowle\ndgeofplagiarism. Atotalof 106\nundergraduate students were presented with an\noriginal paragraph and three rewritten versions\nof the original paragraph, one of which was\nconsidered plagiarized according to published\nguidelines because it included strings of words\ncopied directly from the original text with\nproper citation but without quotation marks;\nanother of which was considered acceptable\nbecause quotation marks were placed around\nthe words copied from the original text with\nproper citation; and the third was also considered\nacceptable because the original text was\nproperly paraphrased without copying exact\nwords or structure accompanied by proper attribution.\nThe students were asked to compare\neach rewritten version of the paragraph to the\noriginal text and identify whether each version\nwas acceptable (not plagiarized), indeterminable,\nor inappropriate (plagiarized). The results\nsuggested that the students’ knowledge of\nproper ways of citing and paraphrasing the\noriginal text was insufficient and that their criteria\nfor distinguishing plagiarism and\nappropriate citations were ambiguous. These\nfindings suggest that some students would\ncommit plagiarism unintentionally because\nthey do not understand what plagiarism is.
