The Shiga University Rowing Club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. The club had a brilliant competitive record from its early days to the prewar and postwar periods, and was once one of the strongest collegiate rowing clubs in the Kansai region. After that, the club fell into the danger of disbandment due to problems with the coaching system and a decrease in club membership. In recent years, however, the club's competitive record has been improving, although it has not reached the competitive level of the past.
The purpose of this study was to review in detail the management of the Shiga University Rowing Club and its coaching system and coaching methods, including external coaches, over the period of 41 years from 1978 to 2019, and to compare the periods when the club's competitive record was excellent and low. The study also clarified the future issues and direction of the coaching system and coaching methods as well as of the support activities of the “Ryosui Rowing Association,” the alumni association of the Shiga University Rowing Club, which will be necessary for reconstructing the Shiga University Rowing Club into one of the most competitive collegiate rowing clubs in the Kansai region. |
