| 内容記述 | This thesis is aimed at shedding light on the relationship between the lending activities of Japanese banks and the country’s industrial development before World War II. Regarding Japanese economic development before World War II, attention has been focused more on the effect of stock market functions, rather than lending by banks and other financial institutions. In this thesis I took a brief overview of the relationship between the lending activities of banks and other financial institutions in the prewar era, and studied the relationship between bank lending and industrial development in each prefecture by statistical means. What the study shows is that, at least in the years before the enforcement of the Banking Act, bank lending in each area had a positive impact on local industrial development. However, after 1928, when the Banking Act was established, the impact of such lending apparently wore off. The study results suggest that bank lending played a considerably important role in advancing Japanese industrialization, at least in the era before the enforcement of the Banking Act. |
