This paper aims to give\ncritical assessment of J. M. Keynes (1883-1946)\nand F. H. Knight (1885-1972), two great economists\non probability and uncertainty. It is quite\nremarkable to see that there are many contemporaries\nof outstanding achievement in the\nKeynes-Knight era: A. Marshall (1842-1924),\nH. Poincaré (1854-1912), M. Weber (1864-\n1920), Soseki Natsume (1867-1916), Torahiko\nTerada (1878-1935), and A. Einstein (1879-\n1955). While these men are somewhat different\nin personality and research field, there is one\nthing in common: They are all deep thinkers\nof unthinkable phenomena such as bubbles,\nchance, chaos, complexity, crisis, earthquakes,\nhazards, and sufferings.\nIn the light of the history of economic\nthought, we understand that some economists\nmay be micro-oriented or macro-oriented\nwhereas others may be concerned with certainty\nor uncertainty. We find it quite convenient\nto classify all the economists from the time of\nAdam Smith to the present day into the following\nfour groups. They are:(1)micro and\ncertainty, (2)macro and certainty, (3)macro and\nuncertainty, and (4)micro and uncertainty. In\nmy opinion, the first group is represented by L.\nW. McKenzie, an authority in general equilibrium\ntheory and incidentally my mentor at\nRochester; and the second one by Karl Marx,\nthe founder of the Marxian school. The third\ngroup is led by J. M. Keynes, perhaps the greatest\neconomist of the 20th century and the\noriginator of the Keynesian school; and the\nfourth one by F.H. Knight, the grandfather of\nthe original Chicago school.\nAccording to Torahiko Terada, a famous scientist\nand essayist, natural disasters will return\nwhen they are out of people’s memory. Likewise,\nacademic geniuses will return before old\nheroes are out of our scene. At the beginning\nof the 21st century, it is quite regrettable that\nneither Keynes nor Knight is in sight.
