Then he sailed for China on a visit which was to lengthen to two years. The purpose of this paper is to study John\nDewey’s thought on the liberalism in Japan and the international relations in the Far East. Dewey discussed the conditions of liberalism and democracy in Japan after the First World War. Dewey realized how systematic is the emperor-\ncult and how completely it becomes a part of the subconscious mental apparatus of all the pupils. It is hostile to a critical thought and free discussion and has suppressive and silencing\neffect. It is the nub of obstacles with which liberalism in Japan has to contend. Dewey realized that the problem for the peace and stability is to find measures which will both safeguard China’s slow but normal and independent development and also remove the sources of discord among other nations. Dewey suggested that Washington Conference should establish a permanent international commission for Far Eastern affairs. This suggestion involved much surrender of vested interests by foreign nations, especially by Japan. According to Dewey, it is ridiculous to suppose that the problems the Far East can be settled in a few years.
