The purpose of those surveys\nwas to analyze and compare the distributions of risk perceptions\namong people from personal and public points of view in the two countries. We obtained the following empirical results among others. （1）Concerning\nthe relationship between personal and public risks, the distribution\nmaps in the U.S.（Hirose et at., 1992―93）and in Japan（this paper,\n2006 & 2008）were quire analogous, whereas those in Japan（1992―93）\nand in China（2006）were considerably similar.（2）In those years from\n1992 to 2008, Japanese risk perceptions underwent marked changes towards\nthe American type.（3）The fact that the Chinese people privately\ngave a much lower risk grade to atomic power plant than the Japanese\npeople was quite interesting, presumably being explained by political and informational factors.\nIn conclusion, an empirical study in risk perception and social culture\nis now gaining popularity among social scientists over the world.
