The infrared remote sensing is available to obtain the temperature distributions of the lake surface. For the infrared remote sensing, the followings are neccessary to take the exact temperature of water surface ; (1) calibration of the infrared imaging sensor, (2) estimation of the emissivity of water surface, and (3) compensation of the atmospheric absorption through the optical path. The results of the basic experiments for the above purposes were as follows ; (1) The calibration curve of the infrared imaging sensor was obtained within 0.18% of probable error by use of a blackbody-type source made in our laboratory. (2) The emissivity of water surface changes with the nadir angle of the sensor. The value of the emissivity as function of the nadir angle can be calculated from the index number water, n=1.2, at infrared wavelength, 10μm, according to the Fresnel formulae of reflection for a specular surface. In a laboratory, the accuracy of temperature measurement by the infrared imaging sensor is within 0.5℃ at the nadir less than 75°. (3) The atmospheric absorption through the optical path can also be estimated by the absorption coefficients of H2O and CO2 under the meteorological conditon of the experiment. In the case of the observation with a slant optical path from a top of a moutain or a high biulding near the beach, the accuracy were 1℃under 60°of the nadir angle at day time, and 0.6℃ at smaller than 70°of the nadir angle at night time.
