I hope that this study of ergative verbs will give a key to finding how syntax and semantics interrelate.    Why can native speakers of English distinguish ergative verbs from unergative verbs instinctively? There must be some kind of subconcious rule in their minds. I assume that the rule is this : the meaning of ergative verbs fundamentally involves a notion of change-of-state. In short, our conceptualization of events as change-of-state, to a large extent, motivates both the choice of ergative verbs and ergative constructions. English does not have spontaneous voice; while, in works of Japanese linguistics, it has been contended that there is  spontaneous voice in japanese. Then how does English can express such an idea of spontaneity.
