These brands are associated with some wildlife protection. The fish-friendly rice produced in Shiga prefecture, which is named "Sakana-no-yurikago-suiden Mai" meaning the rice from cradle paddy of fishes, targets the preservation of habitat for endemic fishes in Lake Biwa. This paper shows consumer recognition for this rice, based on questionnaire surveys conducted in urban and rural areas close to the producing regions. The main findings are as follows: In the both areas, the percentage of consumers know the rice becomes higher as their age increase. It is also higher for those consumers with children.
