We have initiated an investigation into the glycolipids of the antarktic krill, Euphausia
superba, which belongs to the class crustacea, and have found that the glycolipid series are mainly classified into the arthro series. In this study, furthermore, a novel mannolipid was discovered in triglycosylceramide components from whole tissues of the antarktic krill. Its carbohydrate structure was characterized as Manα 1-3 Manβ1-4 Gal, not previously described, by gas-liquid chromatography, permethylation study, partial acid hydrolysis and exoglycosidase degradation.
